Capsule Thrifting

Capsule Thrifting is a thrift store constructed on the boundary edge of an existing Queenslander site in West End. Following the capsule concept, the design consists of cubic modules arranged by an extension and rotation of the existing stump grid of the site, and a geometric curved canopy supported by timber posts following the organic vegetative grid. The canopy consists of solid and translucent polycarbonate panels set at different angles to be an extension of the tree canopy, filtering and diffusing light.

SITE PLAN AND SITE SECTION

The existing site feature of the hills-hoist clothesline was abstracted to inform the basic components of this design; thin vertical elements supporting a canopy, and the functional theme as a second-hand clothing store. Exposed timber stud construction of the capsules echo the language of the existing Queenslander, and when combined with the polycarbonate canopy structure, create a contemporary playfulness for patrons. The concept of canopy is inextricably linked to its natural origin of a tree canopy, so this design extends the existing tree canopy to allow users to experience natural circadian filtered light and observe overarching trees.

The gap between clothing and fitting capsules guides the covered entrance to the undercroft. Passing this entrance reveals a secret garden through strategic mirror panelling, echoing the functional theme and enticing further exploration of the site. This garden in addition to a thrifting capsule can be accessed by travelling through slim, sliding corridor spaces, enhancing experience and atmosphere.
