Moulded Memories

The brief called for reactivation of the UQ river front with strong connection to its existing memory and history. Moulded Memories stands as a Flood Resilience Exhibition and Education Centre within this riverfront node, taking its form from the cracked mud among grassy plumes left by the 2022 floods. The consistent elevation upon steel supports stands in defiance of the site’s drop-off and subsequent flood risks, as well as providing a strong visual impression at a UQ gateway, being located to close to the ferry terminal and the Eleanor Schonell Bridge.

COURSE
ARCH2200: MEMORY AND HISTORY

COMPLETED
DECEMBER 2022

Prior to the provision of any formal brief, this course required the exploration and representation of both material and atmospheric elements in and around campus. As the site was to be located in UQ, the character of its current state had to be examined. These drawings are examples of this exploration, pulled from the sketchbook I used for the duration of this course.

The different functions of the scheme are connected by perforated metal walkways among the tree canopy, with the perforations designed after a jacaranda bloom, and the gradient by the range of colours that can be observed within the sandstone of the Great Court. By designing these elements, the space facilitates these new functions while remaining strongly tied to UQ identity and aesthetic.
